Dr. Stephen Schafer

Stephen J. Schafer is recently retired from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) where he held the position Executive Director of Development for Corporations and Foundations in the Office of Institutional Advancement for nearly 12 years. Although retired from UAMS, Dr. Schafer continues to hold a faculty post in the College of Nursing.


Stephen has over 20 years of experience in senior level organizational advancement leadership.  He has gained expertise in strategic planning, fundraising, comprehensive campaign design and management and insight into all aspects of nonprofit institutional development, both public and private. Dr. Schafer has served as Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Philander Smith College in Little Rock and also as a member of the Board of Trustees of Bethune Cookman University, Daytona Beach, Florida, where he chaired the Board Development Committee and later served as Vice President of Institutional Advancement. He also was the founding Director of Development in the Office of Development for the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension, in Little Rock.


Dr. Schafer is a native Minnesotan and a graduate of Loyola University of the South, New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Schafer earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of St. Michael’s College in the Toronto School of Theology at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. In addition to Philander Smith and Bethune Cookman, his higher education teaching appointments include the following undergraduate and graduate institutions: Christian Brothers College, Ontario, Canada; Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, NL, Canada; Notre Dame Graduate School of Theology, New Orleans, LA.; Loyola University, New Orleans, LA.; and Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, NC.
